Dream #23
Dream #23
Can you imagine our faces when Pedro Bento, a portuguese man from Almeirim, called us and said: "Pedro and Ghazal, I'm gonna pedal 10.000 kms in a bicycle between Portugal and Nepal and I want to fundraise and help your project Dreams of Kathmandu".
We met Pedro 3 years ago when he visited Camp Hope in Kathmandu. Meanwhile he had a serious accident riding his bicycle and his injuries were so bad that there was the possibility that he could not walk again… For a long period he remained in the hospital and he had little hope.
But for those who know Pedro, giving up is a word that doesn't exist in his dictionary. So, besides recovering from his injuries he decided to make this epic journey of more than 70 days, alone, in a bicycle, crossing many many countries and fundraise a total of 10.000€. He even visited us in Iran, what an incredible sight when we found him in the middle of a road in the outskirts of the capital Tehran.
The majority of the funds, around 8000€, were meant to be given to the Fireman of his hometown, Almeirim. Pedro has a lot of gratitude towards them, because they helped him a lot on their recovery process.
And 1500€ were meant to be given to our project Dreams of Kathmandu. In the end Pedro decided to help another project of ours with the remaining money. But that story we will tell in another future dream.
So, together we decided to apply the 1500€ in the scholarship of Mingmar and Tenzing Sherpa, the sister and brother that we know since the times of Camp Hope. Since last year that we are responsible for paying their school fees in Mount Kalaish School.
Every year we visit them and we make sure that all is going well and this year was no exception. Last May me and Ghazal visited them and we assure all is well with their school education, hygiene, basic needs, clothing and other aspects of their daily living. Staying in a school like this in Kathmandu might not be easy and sometimes we hear stories of some children that are victims of bad treatments or abuse. That's why for us it's fundamental to keep a close contact.
But back to the story of Pedro Bento, we are very happy to announce it finished like in the fairy tales: The hero Pedro, arrived in his "horse", smiling and safe, and he saved all the children :-) we were so happy for him and we also helped organizing a reception with many of the children from Camp Hope, including Mingmar and Tenzing, at Hotel Dwarikas, our home in Nepal. Others like Bimal, Krishna, Manisha, Doma, Pema, Binita and Pasang also joined! We miss them so much and they are so grown!!
Once again, our hearts are full to see the involvement of people like Pedro. He showed us that with strong will there is nothing we can't do, and helping the others is one of the most noble things we can achieve in life. Bravo Pedro, we are so proud of you!!
